Casbah Gets Listed
The BBC Reports that Liverpool’s “Casbah Club” has been given a Grade II listed building status after a recommendation from the English Heritage organization.
The Casbah is the club built by Pete Best’s mother Mona in the basement of their home in West Derby where the second incarnation of The Quarry Men (John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ken Brown) played on opening night. It was also here that John, Paul and George got to know Pete and after he joined the group (by then rechristened as The Beatles) they became regulars at the club through 1961 and 1962.
The story of the Casbah Club is detailed in Pete Best’s book, The Beatles – The True Beginnings, as well as my own Before They Were Beatles.
