BEATLES Day By Day 3/11/61

Saturday, 11th March, 1961

The Beatles kicked off the evening with another gig at the Aintree Institute, before heading of to the Liverpool Jazz Society on Temple Street for the first in a series of “BIG BEAT SESSIONS.”

These were the brain child of innovative promoter Sam Leach who promised a full 12 hours of music featuring the best local bands. Starting at 8:00pm the “session” ran all night through to 8:00am on Sunday morning. Although the venue had an official capacity of 1000, it is estimated that over 2000 people saw at least a portion of the event throughout the night.

An advert in the local paper gave the line up for the “All Night Rock Ball” as:

  • Gerry And The Pacemakers
  • The Sensational Beatles
  • The Fabulous Remo Four
  • Rory Storm & The Hurricanes (with Ringo on drums).
  • Kingsize Taylor & The Dominoes
  • The Big Three
  • Dale Roberts & The Jaywalkers
  • Derry & The Seniors
  • Ray And The Del-Renas
  • The Pressmen
  • Johnny Rocco And The Jets
  • Faron & The Tempest Tornadoes

On this particular occasion The Beatles were just one of 12 bands that performed, but over the next two years Sam Leach would hold similar marathon events at other venues most of which would feature The Beatles as the main attraction.
