No News Like Old News
I was amused to see this story pop up on various newswires and websites last week.
Legendary rock group The Beatles were mobbed by diplomats at the British embassy in Washington, when they visited the place for a charity ball, newly released government files have revealed.
This incident has been well reported and documented for over 40 years. Nothing that was mentioned in the following text was new, in fact it was factually incorrect. The report said
The crowd consisting of young foreign officials were so enthralled by the band’s presence that one of them even pulled at drummer Ringo Starr’s lock(s).
Ringo mentions on the Anthology DVD that his hair was snipped off, nut just tugged on – and the perpetrator was not in fact a diplomat, but a young American fan that had crashed the reception.
During a booksigning in the Washinton DC area I was lucky enough to have met someone who was at the British Embassy that night, and from what she told me no-one has ever really got the story straight of just how chaotic things were.
