Memories of The Beatles – Wolverhampton 1963

The UK’s Express and Star Midlands Life website recently reported a startling find at the Gaumont Cinema in Snow Hill, Wolverhampton. It appears that the venue’s manager Joe Alexander maintained a “guest book” which was signed by every act to play the venue from 1958 onwards.

Included alongside the signatures ranging from Buddy Holly to Robert Plant are a complete set of autographs belonging to the Fab Four. The one notable thing about this particular set of signatures is that it dates from The Beatles first appearance at The Gaumont on March 14th 1963 when the group were performing without John who had lost his voice due to a heavy cold. His signature in the book proves that even though he wasn’t performing he was present on the night.

The Beatles returned to The Gaumont on November 19th, 1963 when three lucky teenager readers from the local Express and Star newspaper, Diane Wright, Janet Boyd and Geoffrey Clarke, got to spend a few minutes with The Boys before the performance.
