BEATLES – Day By Day – 7/6/61

Thursday 6th July 1961.

Today saw the publication of the first issue of MERSEY BEAT, the local Liverpool music scene newspaper, created, written and edited by John Lennon’s friend, Bill Harry. The paper was to christen a whole new musical genre and to become synonymous with the early career of The Beatles.

In fact on page two of this first issue included “‘Being A Short Diversion On The Dubious Origins Of Beatles (Translated From The John Lennon)“. Which you can read in full HERE. Bill Harry gives a detailed account of the paper’s beginnings at the current Mersey Beat website, and you can purchase a facsimile copy of the first edition through his Rock And Pop Shop.
