BEATLES – Day By Day – 2/12/62

Monday, 12th February, 1962

The Beatles travelled to Broadcasting House in Piccadilly, Manchester to audition for the local BBC radio station. The audition came as a result of Brian Epstein’s application to the Variety Department on January 10th.

The audition was to be held for Peter Pilbeam, producer of “teen” radio prgrammes for the North-West of England, although his shows were often broadcast nationally.

The Beatles performed four songs. Paul sang his “Like Dreamers Do,” and “Till There Was You,” while John perfomed lead vocals on “Memphis Tennesse,” and “Hello Little Girl.” Pilbeam wrote a “No” against Paul’s name on the audition application while John received a more positive “Yes” notation. He also added a note that The Beatles were “an unusual group, not as ‘Rocky’ as most, more CW with a tendancy to play music.

Despite his mixed opinion on the lead singers, Pilbeam decided to book the group to appear on a show called “Teenager’s Turn” to be recorded on March 7th, 1962.
