BEATLES – Day By Day – 2/11/63

Monday, 11th February, 1963

In Studio Two of  EMI’s Abbey Road Studios, London. The Beatles complete ten songs for their first album in just 585 minutes. While it was not unusual at the time for groups to record an album in a single day, it was unusual for one of this quality to be produced, especially one with so many original songs.

The recordings: “There’s a Place” (13 takes) “Seventeen” (later renamed “I Saw Her Standing There”) (12 takes); “A Taste of Honey” (7 takes); “Do You Want to Know a Secret” (8 takes); “Misery” (11 takes); “Anna (Go To Him)” (3 takes); “Boys” (1 take); “Chains” (4 takes); “Baby It’s You” (3 takes); and “Twist and Shout” (2 takes – the first take recorded was the one used on the album).

The Beatles also recorded “Hold Me Tight” (13 takes) but were unhappy with the results and put it aside (it will be re-recorded later, on September 12, 1963, and included on The Beatles‘ second album, “With the Beatles”).

The four songs from The Beatles‘ first two singles make up the balance of the album, “Love Me Do,” “P.S. I Love You,” “Please Please Me,” and “Ask Me Why.” The album, “Please Please Me,” will be released on the Parlophone label on March 22.
