BEATLES – Day By Day – 1/4/62
Thursday, 4th January, 1962
Issue #13 of Mersey Beat  arrived in stores around Liverpool today, proclaiming The Beatles as Liverpool’s top beat group in their first “popularity poll,” ahead of Gerry & the Pacemakers, The Remo Four, Rory Storm & the Hurricanes (with Ringo), and Johnny Sandon & the Searchers.
The front page of the paper is dominated by a photo of the group in their leather gear, taken by local photographer Albert Marrion .
The paper mistakenly printed Paul’s name as “McArtey.” and years later it was later revealed that Mr. “McArtey” and his pal Mr. Lennon had stuffed the ballot by filling in dozens of blank ballots under various aliases.
