The Beatles start the day at the EMI Abbey Road Studios in London without George. During the morning Ringo ovedubs vocals for I Wanna Be Your Man.

George arrives back from his visit to the US around lunch time and the group moves over to the NEMS Enterprises London offices on Monmouth Street for a radio interview. The interview was for a the BBC spoken word magazine program The Public Ear. This particular show, scheduled to be broadcast on November 3rd, was devoted to The Mersey Beat and also included interviews with Bill Harry (founder of Mersey Beat), Pete Best and Millie Sutcliffe (Stuart’s mother).

After the interview was taped Ringo drove to Southend to see a show featuring The Everly Brothers, Bo Diddley and The Rolling Stones.

The Beatles perfomed two seperate shows in the same evening, both at the same venue,  The Majestic Ballroom in Birkenhead.

The evening started off with a regular Saturday night performance at the Majestic, then at midnight festivities started for the first Mersey Beat Poll Awards show.

As winners, for the second year running, The Beatles closed the show  - at 4:00am!

While the Beatles were travelling back from Hamburg, a columnist in this week’s issue of Mersey Beat was posing the question of if The Beatles  could become “national stars.”

During its second week on the UK pop charts, Love Me Do climbed three spots to #46.

As could be expected the previous day’s issue of Mersey Beat had placed Love Me Do at the #1 poistion on its list of “Merseyside Tops.”

Today marks a landmark for Mersey Beat as this week’s issue is the first time they actually spell Paul McCartney’s name correctly. [So far it has appeared as McArthy, McArtrey and McArtney.] The occasion is an article by Paul recalling their first few months in Hamburg the previous year.

The Beatles played their rescheduled lunch time gig at The Cavern. In the evening they made their debut at the Rialto Ballroom on Upper Parliment Street in the Toxteh area of Liverpool as part of a Sam Leach promotion.

The 6th Spetember issue of Mersey Beat included a essay entitled “On Safairy with Whide Hunter” by Beachcomber (aka John Lennon) along with a look back at the early days of The Beatles by Paul “McArtney.”

John Lennon spent the morning getting married to his long time, and newly pregnant, girlfriend Cynthia Powell. The ceremony took place at the Mount Pleasant Register Office in central Liverpool with Paul McCartney as the best man. The wedding “reception” is lunch at the nearby crowded Reeces Cafe, where the couple are toasted with glasses of water. Brian Epstein paid for the meal.

Mersey Beat officially announces the change of Beatles drummer, leading to some Pete Best fans starting petitions protesting his replacement by Ringo.

The Beatles played at the Cambridge Hall on Lord Street in the seaside town of Southport. It was the first of two consecutive NEMS Enterprises promotions organized by Brian Epstein with The Beatles supporting current star Joe Brown and his Bruvvers. Brown was at number 3 in the UK charts with A Picture of You. The song was a particular favorite of Brian’s and was slotted into The Beatles set with George on lead vocal.

The issue of Mersey Beat dated July 26th carried an article on The Beatles’ growing audience outside of the Liverpool area.

While The Beatles were in Hamburg, Brian Epstein returned to London to follow up on his earlier, February, meetings with George Martin. The two meet at Abbey Road where Martin agrees to setting up an audition for The Beatles with EMI/Parlaphone in early June after their return from Hamburg.

Brian Epstein wires The Beatles in Hamburg with news of the audition, and in a show of supreme confidence wires Mersey Beat the “news” that The Beatles have secured a recording contract with EMI.
