“Silver Beetles” pub honored
Liverpool’s Jacaranda Bar on Slater Street has been selected as one of the 15 pubs across the UK to receive the inaugral “Britain’s Pubs In Time” award. A silver plaque will be unveiled in the cellar area by the original owner Mr. Allan Williams, now aged 75.
Back in 1960 Allan Williams opened The Jacaranda, or “The Jac” as it became known, as a coffee bar that soon became popular with local rock bands as a hang-out. Williams chose as his house band a scruffy bunch of teenagers who used to hang around the place all day. Throughout 1960 “The Silver Beetles” became a regular fixture playing lunch time and evenings in the cellar at The Jac. Later in the year they asked Allan Williams to be their first manager, and it was through his efforts that they ended up securing their historical gigs in Hamburg.
