Earliest US Concert Poster auctioned.

The concert poster shown above is one of only three known surviving examples from the Beatles first US tour in 1964. The concert at the Philadelphia Convention Hall was the only one of the 25 stops on the debut tour to have a specific promotional poster.

Apart from it’s historic importance the poster is striking in that it differs from the traditional “boxing match” style posters of the period. To make it instantly recognizable to the Beatles fans it uses a simple black and white design combining the familiar Beatles logo along with the portrait images used on the 1964 Topps Bubble Gum wrappers and cards.

It isn’t known how many of the cardboard posters were printed, and it’s been suggested that this particular example was posted shortly after the concert was announced, but before tickets went on sale, as the start time was later moved from the 7:00pm shown here to 8:00pm which was on the tickets.

The poster was auctioned this weekend by the specialist “It’s Only Rock N Roll” auction house and was expected to fetch a record price. The auction also included many other Beatles related concert posters, ticket stubs and memorabilia.
