Last Friday evening I was lucky enough to host a private house concert featuring the two lead guitarists from the excellent Beatles tribute band Daytripper in an “un-plugged” session. The showÂ was two hours of great Beatles songsÂ and chat about the Fab Four’s music.

Here’s a short video I shot of them perfoming my wife’s favorite Beatles track – “Dear Prudence.”

Just a personal note of thanks to the people who turned out for the Book People event last Friday to celebrate the 50th Annivesary of the Day That John Met Paul.

It was a fun night, with some great questions and discussions. There were some very knowledgable Beatles buffs in the audience. Thanks also to the boys from Day Tripper for supplying some great music.

Book People to Host Lennon & McCartney Event

Friday, July 6th, 2007 will mark the 50th Anniversary of the day that Paul McCartney was introduced to John Lennon and the seeds of the greatest songwriting team in popular music were sown. It could also be argued that this was also the day that the first steps were taken on the road to the formation of The Beatles.

To celebrate the anniversary, Book People, “The Largest Bookstore in Texas,” will be hosting a special Lennon & McCartney event.

Beatles writer Alan J. Porter (yes that’s me) will be reading an extract from his critically acclaimed book “Before They Were Beatles” and talking about the events of that day in June 1957.

To kick off the event top Beatles tribute group Day Tripper will be providing a selection of classic Lennon and McCartney tunes.

TheÂ festivities start at 7:00pm on Friday 6th July at Book People, 6th & Lamar, Austin, TX.

Fab Faux To Perform Imaginary Fab Four Album

Did you ever wonder what wouldÂ have been on the next Beatles album if John, Paul, George and Ringo had stayed together a little longer? The excellent New York based tribute band “The Fab Faux” will try to answer that question on Tuesday and Wednesday next week with a performance at the city’s Webster Hall that is made up of material from the various member’s early solo careers done in full Beatles style.

The set willÂ consist of John Lennon songs “Jealous Guy,” “Instant Karma,” “Mother,” “Remember” and “Gimme Some Truth.” From Paul McCartney comes “Maybe I’m Amazed,” “Every Night,” “Another Day,” “Hot as Sun/Glasses” and “Oo You.”Â George Harrison’s tunes includeÂ ”All Things Must Pass“, “My Sweet Lord” and “What is Life.” and Ringo Starr’s, “It Don’t Come Easy.“

It is known that many of these songs were treid out by The Beatles prior to the 1970 break up of the band, so these concerts will be an interesting exercise in “What If?” style speculation.

Legends New Ringo…

From the What Goes On web-site – Beatles tribute band Liverpool Legends and Louise Harrison announces they are pleased to welcome Greg George as their new Ringo (below). Greg was formerly with “1964 The Tribute” and is probably the most sought-after Ringo Starr impersonator/look-alike in the entire world, and they are honored to have him as a part of Liverpool Legends.

Greg has portrayed Ringo in thousands of concerts including several appearances at Carnegie Hall. His world class drumming and jaw-dropping resemblance to Ringo often make people believe they are seeing the REAL Ringo.

New Beatles Convention for Toronto

Forty years after The Beatles whipped Canadian fans into a frenzy for the last time at Toronto’s Maple Leaf Gardens, Beatlemania is set to hit the city all over again.

The Toronto Beatles Celebration, the city’s first-ever downtown Fab Four convention, will be held September 16 and 17, organizers announced recently.

The Beatles performed at the now-closed indoor arena August 17, 1966, the same day John Lennon expressed his admiration for American Vietnam draft dodgers who had fled to Canada.

A huge lineup of guests will take part in the weekend-long event at Exhibition Place.

They include former Beatles drummer Pete Best, Canadian Denny Doherty of the Mamas and the Papas, John Lennon’s former personal assistant Fred Seaman, Beatles author Bruce Spizer and former Beatles promotion manager Peter Bennett.

Beatles cartoonists, autograph collectors, photographers and publishers will also be there for audio-visual presentations, a mod fashion show, a memorabilia exhibit and two concerts by the internationally recognized Beatles tribute band, 1964 The Tribute.

Toronto’s Beatles tribute band Fab Four and Canadian Liverpool legend Hal Bruce will perform at the convention.

White Album – Live In Austin TX This Friday

This Friday, May 19, Will Taylor and Strings Attached will close its 5^th season with a live performance of the complete Beatlesâ€™ White Album, with close to 30 Texas musicians. The special concert will be held in Austin, TX at the University Baptist Church at 2130 Guadalupe St. There will be two shows, one at 7:30pm and one at 10:00pm.

This is a chance to relive the past as Strings Attached and special guests bring to life the Beatlesâ€™ acclaimed album from 1968. Each song carries a story, and perhaps they play in the soundtrack of your own life story. This is a special, one-night-only show that is bringing together past and present, young and old, musicians and music-lovers, all sharing in this unique experience.
