On this day the Beatles Hits EP (Parlophone 8808) was released in the UK containing 4 tracks, “From Me to You,” “Thank You Girl,” “Please Please Me,” and “Love Me Do.”

The Beatles perform two more shows at the Winter Gardens in Margate.

The same day The Beatles’ 4-track Extended-Play (EP) “Twist and Shout” (Parlophone GEP-8882) is released in the U.K. Tracks: “Twist and Shout,” “A Taste of Honey,” “Do You Want to Know a Secret,” and “There’s a Place.” Highest chart position: No.1.

Tony Sheridan and the Beatles’ EP “My Bonnie” (Polydor EPH-21610) is also released in the U.K. on the same day. Tracks: “My Bonnie,” “The Saints,” “Why,” and “Cry for a Shadow.”

In Studio Two at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios, The Beatles record the songs for their next single, “She Loves You” and “I’ll Get You” (under the working title “Get You In the End”). EMI will issue “She Loves You/I’ll Get You” (Parlophone 5055) on August 23. As a result of The Beatles’ recording schedule been published in the weekly pop papers, a large crowd had gathered outside EMI’s Abbey Road Studios, and the police had to be summoned twice.

Staying in the north The Beatles play at the Majestic Ballroom in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In their hotel room after the gig, John Lennon and Paul McCartney write their next single “She Loves You.”

The Roy Orbison tour heads in to Wales with a stop at the Capitol Cinema in Cardiff.

In the USA, VeeJay release the single “From Me to You/Thank You Girl” (VeeJay 522) it will only reach No.116 on Billboard’s singles chart.

The opening night of the Roy Obrison Tour, the third tour for the Beatles in only 5 months. Due to demand The Beatles are moved up to joint headliners alongside Orbison. The Beatles’ song list for this tour is “Some Other Guy,” “Do You Want to Know a Secret,” “Love Me Do,” “From Me to You,” “Please Please Me,” “I Saw Her Standing There,” and “Twist and Shout.” Also on the tour bill are Gerry & the Pacemakers, Tony Marsh, the Terry Young Six, Erkey Grant, Ian Crawford, David Macbeth, and Louise Cordet.

Opening night is two shows at the Adelphi Cinema in Slough. Before the show, Gerry Marsden of the Pacemakers presents The Beatles with their second silver disc, for “From Me to You.

“From Me to You/Thank You Girl” (Parlophone 5015), the Beatles’ second single, is released in the U.K. and will spend 17 weeks on the charts; and be the first to hit the No.1 spot.

The Beatles perform at the Cavern Club, headlining an eight-hour “Rhythm and Blues Marathon.” This is the first Beatles appearance at the Cavern in nearly two months.

In Studio Two, of EMI’s Abbey Road Studios, London, The Beatles record “From Me to You” just five days after John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the song. Originally intended for the B-side of their second single, it is switched to the A-side with “Thank You Girl” on the B-side. They record “From Me to You” (13 takes) and “Thank You Little Girl” later changed to “Thank You Girl,” (13 takes). The Beatles record “The One After 909” (5 takes) but none are considered good enough for release. They will eventually be released as part of the Anthology project.

On this day “Please Please Me/Ask Me Why” (VeeJay 498) is released in the U.S. First pressings of this single have their name incorrectly spelled as with two “T”s – “The Beattles.”
