The Beatles perform a second “songs only” preview/rehearsal of their upcoming Christmas show at the Empire Theatre in Liverpool.

The Beatles returned from a few days off to what was probably one of the busiest days of their career to date.

At home in Liverpool for the first time in four months they would record two TV shows, record a radio interview and play two shows – all in one day.

The day’s activities kicked off at the Empire Theater with a specially recorded edition of the popular BBC TV show Juke Box Jury in which celebrity guests listened to new pop releases and determined if they would be a “Hit” or a “Miss.” On this occasion all four panelists would be Beatles. The show was recorded in front of 2500 screaming members of the Northern Area Beatles Fan Club, and broadcast (screams and all) later that evening.

30 minutes after the taping of Jule Box Jury had wrapped, The Beatles once again took to the stage of the Empire, in front of the same (still screaming) fans for a 45 minute show. 30 minutes of the show would be broadcast by the BBC as It’s The Beatles later that same evening.

Apparently the screaming was so loud that the BBC cameramen and sound recordists couldn’t hear the directors instructions and the end result was deemed to be somewhat of a technical embarrassment by the BBC management.

After the show The Beatles still had one other task to do for the BBC. They recorded a short interview segment for later transmission on the Christmas Day radio show Top Pops of 1963.

With all their BBC obligations fulfilled The Beatles received a police escort down especially closed off streets as they transferred to the near by Odeon Cinema, where they gave two evening performances as part of their continuing tour.

The Beatles mimed to playbacks of I Want To Hold Your Hand and This Boy, and recorded an interview alongside Liverpool comedian, and notorious ad-libber, Ken Dodd.

Filming for the BBC TV documentary continues in Liverpool. This time it picks up outside Ringo’s house at 10 Admiral Grove with Ringo battling his way past a crowd of adoring and screaming kids to George’s waiting open topped car. John and Paul were present but did not participate in this sequence. Ringo then shot a solo interview where he stated his ambition to become a ladies hair-dresser.

With filming complete in Liverpool it was back to Southport for the penultimate night of their engagement at the Odeon Cinema.

The completed documentary was eventually titled “The Mersey Sound” and was broadcast in London and the north of England on 9, October, 1963 and again nationally on 13, November, 1963.

Another day of shooting for the BBC TV documentary, this time back home in Liverpool with The Beatles filmed walking on the top deck of a Mersey ferry boat, signing autographs etc. Then it was off to Liverpool’s Speke airport (now John Lennon Airport) to film a fake arrival scene with them walking down a set of aircraft steps.

After the filming it was a quick drive north back to Southport for two more shows at the Odeon Cinema.

The end of an era. The Beatles last performance at the Cavern Club, the venue that became synonymous with their early career. In two and a half years they played at the Matthew Street club in the heart of Liverpool city center close to 300 times.

Brain Epstein promises that they will return one day, but they never do.

The Beatles perform at the Grafton Rooms in Liverpool. This will be their final performance at the Grafton.

Back in the Liverpool area, The Beatles perform at the Imperial Ballroom in Nelson.

Paul McCartney’s 21st birthday is celebrated with a party at the house of Paul’s Auntie Gin. in Huyton, Liverpool.

John Lennon, who had become drunk, grew enraged when Bob Wooler hinted that John and Brian Epstein may have had a homosexual affair during their vacation to Spain. Lennon gave Wooler a severe beating. Wooler later sued Lennon over the highly-publicized incident, but he dropped the suit when John apologized and paid him damages of 200 pounds.

The Beatles play their last gig at, one time regular venue, the Tower Ballroom in New Brighton as part of a Brian Epstein promoted “Mersey Beat Showcase.“
