“It really was a mad day rushing around London. We’d get half-an-hour, maybe 45 minutes at the most in any one place before too many people arrived.” The 65-year-old photographed the Beatles on a small Nikon camera he still has today, but says no one paid him any attention.

The pieces will mostly include Lennon’s iconic pen and ink drawings, sometimes with dappled spots of color; “minimalist,” as Yoko Ono calls them.”He did some oil paintings way back,” she said in the report. “Pretty large stuff. But I don’t know where they are anymore. I’m fairly certain I don’t have them. They just got lost in the course of life.”

Among the items are lithographs from Lennon’s Bag-One Suite in 1970, some drawings from the ’60s and some limited-edition reproductions signed by Ono.

If I get the time this weekend, I may take the trip over to Houston to check this exhibit out.

The exhibition runs from August 18th to March 2nd 2008.

Rock Art Show is currently offering a limited edition print of a sketch done by Stuart Sutcliffe during the early days of The Beatles, probably around early 1960. “Meet the Beatals” is a watercolor painting (circa 1957 – 1960) featuring the early Beatles in their skiffle days taken from Stuart Sutcliffe’s personal sketchbook. Superimposed on the bottom of the sketch is the text of Stuart’s letter of March 1960 which is believed to be the first documentry evidence of the name change from The Quarrymen to “The Beatals.”

The text of Stuart’s letter reads:

Dear Sir,

As it is your policy to present entertainment to the habitués of your establishment, I would like to draw your attention to the (Quar then crossed out) “Beatals.” This is a promising group of young musicians who play music for all tastes, preferably rock and roll. They have won many competitions including Carroll Levis and auditions for A.T.V.

Taken at Abbey Road Studios in 1967, the photos include images of the fab four relaxing during the recording of, ‘With A little Help From My Friends,’ and eating lunch with producer George Martin.

The photos, taken by Sunday Times photographer Frank Herrmann hours before the band posed for the cover of ‘Sgt. Pepper,’ were thought to have been lost but thanks to modern technology the candid shots have been restored from the original contact sheets.

 The photographs were taken by photographer, Michael Ward, who had been commissioned to cover the band, then little-known, for Honey, a now defunct girls’ magazine. There was so little interest in The Beatles from Ward’s editor that he used only one image, and the rest of the photographs remained undeveloped and unseen until now.  The photographs will go on show as part of the “Beatles On The Balcony” exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery from July 5 to October 22.

Palm Desert resident Ann Marie Ashcraft has been collecting Beatles memorabilia for more than 40 years. She and husband and fellow Beatles fan Richard Ashcraft, have amassed a collection of more than 2,000 items worth about $100,000, including Beatles lunch boxes, wigs, album covers and even board games.

“This is an incredible collection. It’s one of the largest on the West Coast,” said Ruben Padilla, a Beatles expert who has helped the Ashcrafts find some of their rarest items.
