BEATLES – Day By Day – 8/22/62

Wednesday, 22nd August, 1962

The Beatles played both lunch time and evening gigs at The Cavern, but this day was a significant one for The Beatles.

The lunch time session was filmed by Granada TV (the local North of England broadcaster who covered the Liverpool and Manchester area) for a program called Know The North, but due to the poor lighting conditions was considered too grainy for broadcast and only shown over a year later on  6th November 1963 on a show called Scene at 6:30, after The Beatles were gaining national recognition.

The performance was just a week after Ringo had replaced Pete Best on drums and if you listen carefully at the end of the clip you can hear a few people in the crowd shouting “We want Pete!.”

This clip remains the only known footage of The Beatles playing at The Cavern.

Some acetate discs of a perfomance of “Some Other Guy” as recorded by the TV crew were later circulated in Liverpool through Brian Epstein’s NEMS stores. Brian had had the discs pressed locally. Interestingly they feature a slightly different version of the song than the one in the video footage suggesting that the group had performed some songs more than once for the TV cameras.
