BEATLES – Day By Day – 6/6/62

Wednesday, 6th June, 1962

One of the most important days in Beatles history. Today The Beatles played in Studio Two at the EMI Studios at 3, Abbey Road, London for the first time.

The session ran from 7:00 to 10:00pm and started off with The Beatles running through a selection of (undocumented) tunes as an informal audition. Once they had proven their worth they moved straight into a full recording session.

The songs recorded were Besame Mucho followed by three Lennon & McCartney numbers, Love Me Do, PS I Love You and Ask Me Why. According to studio paperwork sample lacquer discs of the session were cut although these particular recordings have never been released.

George Martin was originally absent from the session leaving proceedings to his assistant Ron Richards. When engineer Norman Smith heard Love Me Do he insisted that Martin be called to the booth, where he stayed for the rest of the evening.

According to some reports Martin developed an immediate rapport with John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison but found it difficult to relate to Pete Best. It also appears that George Martin didn’t think that Pete was up to standard for studio work, a view he made known to Brian Epstein.
