BEATLES – Day By Day – 6/21/62

Thursday, 21st June, 1962

The Beatles returned to the Tower Ballroom in New Brighton for a show promoted by Cavern DJ, Bob Wooler. The show line up is evidence of Brian Epstein’s early marketing skill. He developed the habit of signing current chart topping acts to act as headliners, with The Beatles as nominal support. Of course given The Beatles local popluarity they would undoubtly recieve a bigger reception than the headliner, and word would filter back to London that this local group was upstaging the bigger names.

On this occasion the headline act was Bruce Channel who had just scored a Top Ten hit with a song called “Hey! Baby” Channel was accompanied by noted harmonica player Delbert McLinton, who would be a major influence on John Lennon’s harmonica playing over the coming years.

(L-R: Pete, John, Delbert McClinton, Bruce Channel, Paul, George)

Also on the bill were The Big Three, The Statesmen, and The Four Jays. The show started at 7:30 pm and ran till midnight. Admission was 4/6 in advance (with Epstein’s NEMS store being one of the ticket outlets) and 5/6 on the night.
