BEATLES Day By Day – 4/20/61

Thursday, 20th April, 1961

While still performing at the Top Ten Club in Hamburg, Germany, The Beatles sent a letter to their current manager, Allan Williams, informing him that they would not be paying him any commission for their current contract with the Top Ten Club as they had made the arrangements themselves. (This was probably true and so far in 1961 only one of their many gigs in Liverpool had been arranged by Williams.)

On this day Williams responded threatening legal action, a course of  action he never persuaded. The exchange of letters signaled the formal end of the relationship between The Beatles and their first manager.

(In fact Williams wasn’t a manager in the true sense as there was no written contract between him and The Beatles, he also had no say in the group’s line-up or development – his role was closer to that of a booking agent.)
