BEATLES – Day By Day – 2/9/62

Friday, 9th February, 1962

The Beatles played both lunch-time and a night-time gigs at The Cavern today.

As part of Brian Epstein’s plan to move the group away from suburban dance halls and into better venues, they made their first foray onto the college circuit with a gig at the Technical College Hall in Birkenhead, across the River Mersey from Liverpool.

Meanwhile Brian Epstein was still in London trying to ressurect the group’s recording career following the rejection by Decca earlier in the week. Around this date (it may have been a day earlier on the 8th) day he stopped by the HMV record store on Oxford street (owned by EMI) to have a disc cut from the tapes of the Decca audition. While in the store he fell into conversation with the general manager, Bob Boast, (who Brain already knew as a fellow record store owner) and the sound engineer Jim Foy, who were both impressed by what they heard. After finding out that the group wrote their own material, Bob Boast pointed Brain in the direction of music publisher Sid Coleman. Coleman asked about publishing rights, but after Brian made clear that his first priority was securing a recording contract, Coleman made a call to his friend George Martin who has head of A&R at EMI division Parlaphone.

After a follow up meeting between Coleman and Martin, Martin agreed to see Epstein on February 13th.
