BEATLES – Day By Day – 1/27/62

Saturday, 27th January, 1962

The Beatles played what would be their last engagement at long time venue The Aintree Institute in the Aintree area of Liverpool. Their new manager was so upset that promoter Brian Kelly paid the group’s 15 pound fee with handfuls of loose change. Brain Epstein vowed that they would never play for Kelly again.

Today’s issue of The Liverpool Echo included a small paragraph written by Tony Barrow (writing as “Disker”) about the New Year’s Day Decca audition.

Latest episode in the success story of Liverpool’s instrumental group The Beatles: Commenting on the outfit’s recent recording test, Decca disc producer Mike Smith tells me that he thinks The Beatles are great. He has a continous tape of their audition performances which runs for over 30 minutes and he is convinced that his label will be able to put The Beatles to good use. I’ll be keeping you posted….

This was the only contemporary published account of the Decca auditions.
