BEATLES – Day By Day – 11/26/62

Monday, 26th November, 1962

Thanks to the sucess of “Love Me Do,” which was still slowly climbing up the charts, EMI invited The Beatles back to Studio Two at Abbey Road, London to record a second single.

The Beatles arrived at 6:00pm and after a short rehearsal went into the recording session at 7:00pm and finished at 9:45pm. During the evening they performed 18 takes of “Please, Please Me,” which was chosen as the single’s A-side. After a short break they recorded six takes of “Ask Me Why” for the B-side. At the conclusion of the session George Martin prophetically told the group that they had just recorded their first number one single.

After completing the single The Beatles played another Lennon & Mccartney composition, “Tip Of My Tongue” for George Martin. Martin wasn’t impressed by the arrangement and shelved it. The Beatles would never record the song but it would be later recorded by Tommy Quickly, another Epstein artist, in 1963.
